On the brow of a hill overlooking two magnificent valleys a few minutes drive from Gubbio lies the Abbey of Vallingegno, at the heart of Franciscan route and in the midst of uncontaminated nature which seems to want to invite us back into time.
The building dates back to before the year 1000. Founded on the ruins of a Roman temple dedicated to the God Genius from which the locality derives its name and also on the ruins of the tomb of St Verecondo, a French knight who came to spread the Christian faith amongst the pagans but who instead was massacred by them and then buried in his place of sacrifice by the few Christians in the area.
